The Scott County Economic Development Corporation and the City of Scottsburg are partnering with Ivy Tech Corporate College to provide a Welding Institute at the Mid-America Science Park. A wide spectrum of training opportunities will be available for Scott County companies, workers and students.
Mayor Bill Graham and the SCEDC held an Industry Forum on May 14, in which 14 local and regional industries participated to discuss the Welding Institute in Scottsburg – one of only three in the state. The partnership serves to upgrade the talent pool of welders, create new jobs and have a positive impact on economic development in Scott County.
SCEDC and Ivy Tech will identify companies that seek to improve the welding skills of incumbent workers and assess and train job seekers applying for welding positions. The goal is to improve the production capabilities of companies in Scott County, making them more globally competitive and creating opportunities for them to expand their business.
The Scottsburg Redevelopment Commission authorized a $900,000 build out at MASP in early May for the Welding Institute. The project, opening January 1, 2014, will include 26 welding booths, a robotic welding cell, a Real Weld Trainer, fabrication shop, classroom space and office space for instructors. The unique training courses have the option of being college credit based or non-credit based.
