Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana is now offering advanced manufacturing classes at the Mid-America Science Park for Scott County School District 2 high school seniors.
High school seniors in Scott County can now earn three college credit hours per semester thanks to a new dual credit program offered by Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana at the Mid-America Science Park. This is the first time Ivy Tech has offered the Advanced Manufacturing (ADMF 101 and 102) dual credit program in Scott County. The school currently has 107 college credits offered through AP, Ivy Tech Community College, Purdue and Vincennes Universities. However, this is the first dual credit program that includes an industry-recognized certification that will boost employment opportunity and support continuing education. Six students are participating in Advanced Manufacturing 101 this semester, getting a head start on their college education and saving on future tuition expenses.
The advanced manufacturing course is taught using three methods of instruction: presentation, e-learning on a computer, and lab instruction using hands-on training equipment. Ivy Tech is offering the program at the Mid-America Science Park because of the technology and virtual capabilities available in its Training & Workforce Development Center, including a state-of-the-art computer lab and a variety of Amatrol training equipment which offers an exciting learning environment for students.
“We are excited to offer our students college and career ready opportunities that will connect their present with their future. Advanced Manufacturing is one such example, and we are happy to partner with Ivy Tech Community College, Scott County Economic Development Corporation, and the Mid-America Science Park to bring this opportunity to the students of SCSD2,” said Dr. Marc Slaton, Superintendent.
“Advanced manufacturing is important to our community and the strength of our regional economy,” said Ric Manns, principal of Scott County School District 2 High School. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain real world experience, learn the skills necessary to compete in today’s workforce, and earn college credits at the same time.”
The students are evaluated and graded via online exams through the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC), an industry-led training, assessment, and certification system. The students also have the opportunity to earn four certifications over two semesters: Safety, Quality Practices & Measurement in the first semester (ADMF 101), and Manufacturing Processes & Production and Maintenance Awareness in the second semester (ADMF 102).
The Scottsburg High School students who are currently enrolled in the program plan to follow a variety of career paths, ranging from computer programming to enlisting in the U.S. Army to sheet metal fabrication. Three students have already signed up for ADMF 102 in the spring. Mr. Manns encourages parents to contact the SHS Guidance Department for more information about this and other college credit opportunities for students. Parents can help their children maximize the potential of earning dual credits and industry-recognized certification.
Ivy Tech is partnering with companies in Scott County and the region to enhance the dual credit program for students. If your business would be interested in offering internships, providing facility tours, or willing to give preference to participating students when interviewing for open positions, please contact SHS Guidance Department at (812) 752-8927 x7040.
